3 Common Leaking Issues Experienced With Residential Drainage Systems

About Me
How to Increase the Size of Your Home

The moment my husband and I stepped into our house, we fell in love with the place. However, after we had lived in the property for a few months, we noticed that it didn't have enough living space. We sat down one day and worked out an improved layout for our home that would increase the amount of space available to us. We called in some contractors to complete the work and we are really pleased with how it turned out. I decided to start this blog to share our home construction journey with anyone who is considering enlarging their home.

3 Common Leaking Issues Experienced With Residential Drainage Systems

One of the most notorious plumbing issues homeowners face with their residential drainage system is leaking. Here is a breakdown of some common types of leaking problems that most professional plumbers are called in to fix.

Leaky faucets

Water faucets are an important part of your residential drainage system. Keeping them in good working condition is critical in ensuring your drainage system works efficiently. Dripping faucets will disturb your sleep, waste water and unnecessarily increase your water expenses. In fact, if a single leaky faucet is left unattended, it can send several gallons of water down your drains each year, one drop at a time.

Some common sources of faucet dripping include mineral incrustation, corrosion, and loose or worn out components including gaskets, washers, and O-rings. Make sure to tighten any loose faucet parts and replace any worn out or rusty faucets. To extend the lifespan of your faucet washers, avoid using excessive force when turning the faucet off.

Leaking water heaters

Many homeowners rely on water heaters for their hot water supply. Like other plumbing appliances, however, water heaters are not immune from leak problems. The leaking can completely cut off water supply or lower water pressure, depending on the size of the leak. Any of the joints or fittings in your appliance is a potential drip spot, but the drain valve located at the lower section of your water tank and the pressure relief valve are among the most common causes of a leak.

Because identifying the root cause of a leak and determining the extent of damage caused to the appliance is a job that requires sufficient skill and experience, it is prudent to let a professional fix the problem. If you are an inexperienced DIYer, attempting to do the repair work may only lead to further problems.

Leaking pipes

Be it a slow drip or water gushing out at high pressure, leaking pipes should never be ignored. Leaky pipes can result in costly damage to floors, walls, and household possessions. Typically, leaks occur at joints and other connections. Quick fixes include using commercially available joint fillers and other sealing compounds. But if the problem is a serious one, one may use the joint fillers as a temporary fix and then replace a faulty pipe or its fittings. It is a good idea to visually inspect your piping or its fittings from time to time so you can notice rust or mineral deposits that may indicate a leak is developing.
