Home Construction: Choosing Between Wood and Steel Roof Trusses

About Me
How to Increase the Size of Your Home

The moment my husband and I stepped into our house, we fell in love with the place. However, after we had lived in the property for a few months, we noticed that it didn't have enough living space. We sat down one day and worked out an improved layout for our home that would increase the amount of space available to us. We called in some contractors to complete the work and we are really pleased with how it turned out. I decided to start this blog to share our home construction journey with anyone who is considering enlarging their home.

Roof trusses are critical features in the structure of a house. Basically, a roof truss refers to the framework which supports the roofing material and connects the space above the main house to the roof. Therefore, you must carefully evaluate your options before selecting the most suitable system to install during your construction project. One of the factors that you should consider when looking for roof trusses is the material. This will determine the durability, performance and ease of installation. Here is a comparison of the two main material options: timber and steel.

Wood Trusses

Timber trusses have been popular for a long time, and they are still used in numerous home construction projects. The material is favourable because it can be used to create diverse truss designs, including king, queen, scissor and arch-based. These wooden trusses are relatively easy to build on site, but you can still purchase them as prefabricated products. In addition, this option will support energy efficiency in your home by supporting the insulation properties of your roof.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks associated with choosing timber trusses. Generally, the material is vulnerable to damage when exposed to adverse conditions such as moisture, insects and fungal growths. However, these issues can be easily prevented if you choose quality wood and ensure that the surfaces are treated against external factors.

Steel Trusses

Steel trusses are usually fabricated in factory settings because the construction requires skilled labour. This type of roofing framework is well-liked because it is strong and can span a greater distance compared to wooden alternatives. Therefore, larger roofs can be covered without using complicated truss designs. This truss option is also compatible with most types of roof configurations in the market. In addition, steel is considered fire-resistant and will not sustain damage from insects or fungal organisms.

There are significant disadvantages attached to selecting steel trusses over wood. This truss framework is more expensive because of the labour required in fabrication and installation. The metal has poor insulation properties, so heat will be gained and lost easily and sound is transmitted extensively. The framework is prone to shifting, depending on the temperature. Additionally, this metal is vulnerable to moisture and subsequent rusting. Any section of the framework which is drilled, welded or cut will be prone to corrosion.
