Two things that can impede the progress of a house-building project

About Me
How to Increase the Size of Your Home

The moment my husband and I stepped into our house, we fell in love with the place. However, after we had lived in the property for a few months, we noticed that it didn't have enough living space. We sat down one day and worked out an improved layout for our home that would increase the amount of space available to us. We called in some contractors to complete the work and we are really pleased with how it turned out. I decided to start this blog to share our home construction journey with anyone who is considering enlarging their home.

Two things that can impede the progress of a house-building project

Construction delays can be incredibly frustrating. If you're planning to build a house soon, it's important to be aware of the mistakes that could impede the progress of your project. Here are some of the most common blunders that can cause delays.

Budgeting errors

Budgeting mistakes are one of the main causes of construction project delays. They are usually the result of a lack of clear communication between the client and their building contractor. For example, let's say you dream of having hardwood timber flooring throughout your new home, but you don't realise how expensive it will be to purchase and install this material.

You then make the mistake of being too vague when discussing this matter with your contractor and they end up giving you a quote for softwood flooring, which is significantly cheaper. If you don't become aware of this misunderstanding until after the project is well underway and the softwood timber supplies have already been purchased, you may have to send them back to the manufacturer and wait for a refund before being able to carry on with the rest of the building work. This could cause a delay from few days to several weeks, depending on the speed with which the supplier processes your refund.

As such, it really is crucial to communicate your needs clearly to your contractor and to make sure that you read through and fully understand the details of their quote before purchasing supplies or hiring subcontractors to carry out other work.

Indecisiveness

Changing your mind about the type of construction materials you wish to use or the layout you want to create in your new home can also cause serious delays to your project. If, for instance, you decide that you want granite countertops in the kitchen rather than the quartz ones you originally requested and the building crew has already begun to install the latter, you could end up causing a delay of several days, as the new materials will need to be ordered, the half-finished installation will need to be removed and the unwanted countertop will have to be sent back to the supplier. In addition to holding up the progress of the project, this will also increase your labour costs (as the builders will have to spend extra time tearing out the countertop you no longer want).

Given how much trouble a lack of decisiveness can cause, it's important to make a conscious effort to avoid making unnecessary changes midway through the building work. Be aware of the things that can trigger your indecisiveness. For example, if you love reading home decor magazines or watching property shows, but are aware that doing so tends to make you second-guess the choices you have made regarding your house-building project, try to avoid these forms of entertainment until your home is completed.
