Factors to Consider When Choosing a Design for Your Custom Shed

About Me
How to Increase the Size of Your Home

The moment my husband and I stepped into our house, we fell in love with the place. However, after we had lived in the property for a few months, we noticed that it didn't have enough living space. We sat down one day and worked out an improved layout for our home that would increase the amount of space available to us. We called in some contractors to complete the work and we are really pleased with how it turned out. I decided to start this blog to share our home construction journey with anyone who is considering enlarging their home.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Design for Your Custom Shed

A shed is a great addition to a countryside home. It can act as a storage space for heavy machinery and farm implements, grains and crops, hay, timber and many other things. The shed can also be a workshop for DIY projects. Designing a custom shed allows you to style the structure to suit your individual needs. However, for you to create the perfect structure, you need to consider these factors that will determine your design options.

Shed location

Your preferred shed location will impact the structure's size and design. When assessing potential location options, ask yourself these questions:

  • How suitable is the location depending on the intended use of the structure?
  • How does the location impact the preferred size?
  • Will the location limit the foundation options for the structure?

The location should be easily accessible from your house or farm. The area should also be adequate to install the shed of your preferred square footage. Finally, it should also allow you to construct a sturdy foundation for the shed. For large sheds, you require a deep foundation to prevent shifting and cracking. Soil conditions and underground utilities can limit your sizing and design options. Therefore, have this in mind before customising the structure.

Shed functionality

What's the intended use of the shed? How will the structure's functionality affect its design? For example, if you want to park vehicles in the shed, factor this into the design. You can have one or two garages to keep your automobiles away from the storage area. You can also have an open-front shed to allow for easy access to items such as timber, hay and fertiliser bags.

Open sheds are also great for storing heavy equipment such as tractors, lawnmowers and other equipment. If you intend to create a livable outdoor space, you can design it with a front or side porch. Have a list of the various applications of your new shed and choose a design that will give the most value out of the new structure.

Interior space

After outlining the location and function of your custom shed, the next important thing is to design the interior space. The intended use of the shed will determine how you customise the interior. For example, a shed that's purely for storing items such as timber and hay can be an entirely open space. However, if you intend to use the space as a workshop, you may require space to set up tools and equipment. When designing the interior space, consider additions such as shelving and cabinets, windows and ventilation.
